Its use of perplexity and burstiness as detection signals reflects a well-established approach to identifying the statistical regularities that characterise AI-generated text: lower perplexity indicates more predictable word choices, and low burstiness indicates less variation in sentence complexity, both of which are common in large language model outputs. The sentence-level highlighting feature is particularly valuable in academic integrity workflows because it shifts the conversation from a binary pass or fail verdict to a more nuanced review, allowing educators to see which specific passages triggered concern and make a contextual judgement. GPTZero performs best on longer submissions of 250 words or more, where the statistical patterns it measures are more reliable. It is less suited to short-form content such as social media posts or product descriptions, where the sample size is insufficient for confident classification. Detection accuracy across all tools in this category also degrades when content has been significantly paraphrased after AI generation, which is a known limitation of the field rather than a specific weakness of GPTZero. For institutional use, the batch upload and dashboard features make it practical at scale, though the free tier is limited enough that serious academic use requires a paid plan.
